My Writing Rules
I've been writing for as long as eighteen years. As I wrote over the years, I came up with some personal rules by which I try and follow, in order to write the stories I want to read.
I write the stories I want to read. I publish to give back to the world what it gave me. I have made an elaborate post on this a few years ago, which you can access here.
And as I wrote over the years, I came up with some personal rules by which I try and follow. Here are some of those rules because of which my writing style has developed as it has to-day:
Writing even one word in one sitting is good progress. Never get yourself down because of the number of words.
Number of words in a book is nothing to break your head about. End the book where it's the most suitable.
Always ensure to describe where description is needed. You need not describe everything; just those that cannot be imagined or seen often.
If you feel you're writing nonsense, carry on anyway. Either you'll one day start making sense or rewrite to make sense. It'll come to you way ahead of finalising, so don't sweat it. Just keep writing, if that's what you want to do. If not, just stop and do something else.
Read books or watch movies/dramas of the same genre/troupe if stuck, for inspiration.
If you can't write and only stare at the document, then do just that.
Reread what's already written to close loopholes and unleash your creativity.
Your plot blueprint should have room for expansion and deletion. Edited scenes can always take space at the end of the book or in a blogpost.
Try to vary the words used in your narration, but don't be oversmart and use unnecessarily complicated words.
Dialogues should be natural and in character.
These are the personal rules I've made up as I write my stories, be they novels or shorts. I'm not seeking approval; merely sharing a part of my writing journey. I personally feel that every writer has their own rules, apart from language grammar rules, something they should not be judged about. If a reader doesn't like them, rather than criticising them, they should just dump the book and move on.
That is all for now. See you all in my next post!
